Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)

This letter serves to inform you about an amendment to our School’s Code of Conduct regarding the use of multimedia storage devices (for example Cell Phones, iPods, Mp3 / Mp4 players, memory sticks, etc.) on our School property.

At an R.C.L (Representative Council of Learners) Meeting held on the 8th of July 2008, the following proposal was raised, discussed and adopted by an outright majority of the members present:

Learners will not be allowed to access or use any of these electronic devices at any time while they are on our School property. This includes the time before School starts, during breaks and after School.

The previous rule that prohibits learners from using these devices during class time still stands.

If any of these devices are visible or a learner is caught using any of them, the following penalties will be applicable from Monday, 18 August 2008:

(1)       First offence - immediate confiscation of the device for a period of

365 days, or until a R300.00 fine is paid.

(2)       Second offence – Governing Body Disciplinary Hearing with the possibility

           of suspension or expulsion.

Note: After payment of the fine, the confiscated item will only be handed back to the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) for security reasons.

We have decided to implement these measures as many learners have abused the privilege of being allowed to use the devices before school, after school and during breaks. Learners are missing valuable teaching time while they are on MXit, making or receiving calls, or listening to music in class while they are supposed to be paying attention to the educators and focussing on their academics.

Sea Point High School is now following the example set by many other schools that have already decided on a general ban of cell phones and other forms of electronic storage devices. I wish to take this opportunity to re-iterate our promise to you to provide an academic institution where we strive to provide the best possible education to all our learners. It stands to reason that, if anything then hampers our efforts to provide this service, it needs to be addressed and rectified. Many learners state that they have to have their cell phones on them at all times in case of an emergency. This is unnecessary; if such an incident occurs, the School can still be contacted on our landline and I can assure you that the necessary mechanisms are in place to deal with any crises.

I trust the School will have your support and co-operation regarding this matter.
